We're sailing!
Last week, the Africa Mercy took to the ocean and we began our journey to South Africa. This past week has been fairly smooth and nice weather which allowed for lots of time outside and on the bow. While in port, we are not allowed on the bow, but during sailing in good weather, it is a nice place to watch the water and something new. Going out during the school day also means that there are less adults out and there is more space for the kids to watch through the rail. We have not seen too much wildlife - some flying fish and a sea turtle, but the kids were impressed with some of the larger splashes the second time we went out.

We have also been having fun with the rest of the Elementary students learning about South Africa. Three days this past week and three days over the next week, we will be learning about the country we are headed to. So far we have talked about the shape of South Africa on a map, foods and games that they plan in South Africa and what the flag looks like. Thanks to all the teachers and people who have helped so far. This coming week we will be talking about languages, art and animals of South Africa. We have made a 'hut' in the Big Room that is a great meeting place. The kids decorated it themselves and the second day we had a small 'fire' in the middle to gather around.

We started the Creation story in Bible this week, but with everything else going on, we were not able to get through all seven days yet. We should be working through the seven days over the rest of the sail and the first few days at our new location. We will be learning a song that works with the tune of 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' and talking about Genesis 1:1 - 'In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.'
Just for fun - stripes on Deck 7 :)
