Week Twenty-Eight

Continued our theme of senses this week with smelling and tasting. I filled up some plastic Easter eggs with different smells (vinegar, cinnamon, vanilla, etc) and passed them around the group. I was actually surprised a couple times when students identified smells that I thought they would have trouble with: honey and coffee (the Starbucks on board does make a difference!). On Thursday and Friday, we connected Easter to our 5 senses by making 'Resurrection Cookies.' They are simple meringues that, when left overnight, will hollow out just like the tomb on Sunday morning. All the of the ingredients also combine to tell the story of the crucifixion. We smelled and tasted most of the ingredients (vinegar, egg whites, sugar, salt and vanilla) and tasted the cookies on Friday. I think there was a bit too much moisture and the oven did not get hot enough because the cookies did not become hollow like they were supposed to, they were still fun to taste.

Wet Wednesday again this week. I am not sure how I came up with the thought, but I am glad I did. It is nice to have a time when I do not have to worry about someone getting too wet or doing something they should not - I know they are getting wet somehow and, unless they are doing something dangerous, I am pretty open to new things to do. This week we had the water table out again with the plastic sea animals. I was wondering how wet the kids would become because there were no real buckets or shovels to dump water with, but I was quickly shown how, when you put water in front of children, they will find a way to get completely soaked :) The animals became tools to splash with and whole heads were dunked into the water table.

This week was also 'job experience' for the 6-12 grades. We were lucky in Preschool to have Rachel Cairncross come, observe and help. On Thursday, Rachel did a cutting and gluing activity to get ready for Easter and she also read tasting stories on Thursday and Friday.
