Weeks 31 and 32

The last two weeks have been very full with pirates, seasons, growing up, treats from old friends and a sad good-bye.

Mercy Ships Academy has started something 'new' this year in that the last Friday of every month is a Spirit Day. School work is the same, everyone still needs to show up, it is just that everyone shows up dressed according to a theme. So far this year, we have had Mercy Ships day, International day, Pajama day, Time Period day and last week, we had Pirate day. Some of the kids in Preschool had been looking forward to dressing up all week and the costumes on Friday did not disappoint. Thanks to all the moms and dad for their creative thinking in making pirate costumes with the things they had around them.

We have been talking more and more about 'changes' the last two weeks - our current (and final) theme. The two changes we have talked about so far are seasons changing and people changing. Trying to teach the traditional four seasons was a little interesting, seeing how most of the students in my class do not know what the 4 seasons are, so I decided to talk instead about the 2 seasons that we see here in West Africa - wet and dry. One day we cut out raindrops and suns and hung them on opposite sides of the room. The next day we moved between the 'wet' and 'dry' seasons pretending to do they things we would normally do at that time of the year. We also made wet and dry season plant pictures to show how plants change during the different times. I was actually surprised and pleased at how they turned out. As you can see, the dry season plant is not as green and lush as the wet season. The wet season plant also has started to bloom and some of the kids drew in water or green grass for wet season.

We also had a special treat the other day at snack from Holland. Thank you Norah and Joyce for the sweeties - we all enjoyed them very much!

Sadly, on the 1st, we also had another sad good-bye. Miriam left with her family to return to the Mercy Ships base in Texas. We hope to hear lots about what she is doing there and want to see lots of pictures of her new baby sister when she arrives this summer!
